If this is your first experience with choosing dinnerware, knowing a few basic suggestions will make the shopping a little easier. There are countless patterns, styles, colors and designs to choose from. If you have a general idea of what you like it help narrow done your choices.
There are many name brands but there are two basic categories. Casual which is used everyday and china which is delicate and should be use only for special occasions. Casual is less expensive than china and more durable.
The basic pieces needed are dinner plates, soup/cereal bowls, tea cups and salad plates. Additional pieces can also be purchased to match your place settings such as dessert bowls, salt/pepper shakers and gravy bowls. These are rarely used and unless you intend to use your dinnerware for regular entertaining are unnecessary purchases.
The best way to judge exactly how many pieces to start with would be to purchase four of each basic piece. It is suggested you purchase additional pieces of the basic dishes; however, if you are just beginning you could purchase additional pieces a few at a time.
There are also two basic shapes to choose from. The most popular and easy to locate are round, the newer more modern pieces are square. The square plates are very attractive, but may be harder to replace should you need to.
Try to choose a style that will go well with the area in which you will be dining. If you are completely torn, opt for round white plates as a temporary option. The white plates look good with every color and dining room design.
After deciding the color, you will need to choose a pattern. You can choose a plain color with no design or you can choose color with design. If you opt for a design, choose one that you will enjoy for many years. Try to steer clear of trendy or seasonal patterns.
Whichever pattern and color you choose the most important thing for everyday use is it durability. The dinnerware should be made well and be able to take a lot of wear. If you prefer there are package sets with settings from four to twelve. These are less expensive normally and very durable.
There are many varieties of china out there. Only one brand has the style and duribility of Johnson Brothers Hearts and Flowers or Johnson Brookshire.

Perfectly good dining experiences at restaurants can be ruined by a few ill thought out actions by waiters. Some things should always be done by servers and some should never be done. To most diners, these things seem obvious. But to a lot of waiters they go by the wayside. Here are a few basics that every waiter should know.
To begin with, you should never bother the patrons by standing around their tables when they are trying to eat. After the food has been served, wait a few minutes and then go check to make sure everything is satisfactory. Then leave them alone to eat in peace. If they need you for anything, they will try to get your attention. So keep an eye on everyone in case somebody is trying to get your attention.
Also, don’t pressure them into making a decision about ordering if they are not ready. If they say that they need a few minutes, actually give them a few minutes before you come back. Don’t come back in 1 minute with pen in hand. If they are not sure what they want, don’t roll your eyes or otherwise express annoyance. It really shouldn’t matter to you how long it takes them to order anyway.
If the restaurant customer has a complaint, ALWAYS say you are sorry. Even if you are not. Do not blame them or make excuses. Apologize and tell them that you will find a way to solve the problem. If there is nothing you can do for them about their particular concern, find somebody who can.
Now onto removing their plates: It is very unlikely that a restaurant is going to run out of plates. If that is a possibility, then the owner needs to buy more. Because it is unacceptable to snatch up plates the second somebody has out the last bit of food into his or her mouth. It is rude and annoying and makes it seem as though you want them to leave.
Something else to keep in mind about dishes is this: Never, ever take away one person’s plates is somebody else at the table is still eating. This is outrageously rude! This could make the person who is still eating feel uncomfortable or rushed into finishing his or her meal. The number of waiters who do this to customers is astounding. Please don’t be one of them.
Additionally you should never chomp on gum or play with your hair while talking to customers. Don’t shout or argue with other employees when diners can hear you. Don’t light up a cigarette where they can see you. No whining about how tired you are how you can’t wait to go home. Do not yawn or act bored or otherwise give off the impression that serving them is a nuisance for you. And by all means don’t count your tips in view of people eating. Nor should you hint at getting tips.
As for the things you should do: Do dress neatly and make sure your hair is combed. Always smile and be polite. Remember to thank them for coming, and say it so that it sounds true. Even if it’s not.

Let’s take a tour around the typical kitchen. You will see various bowls, plates, mugs, and cups, but have you ever stopped to consider what they are made out of? Your typical dinner set is made out of three main materials, namely earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. Most of us have heard of these materials before, but don’t know what the differences are. This article will help to shed some light on this issue…
Earthenware
—————-
Earthenware is what is known as a “low-fired” clay. This means that it is fired at a low temperature (usually around’15 degrees Fahrenheit). Made from a white and porous clay, it is sometimes called “ceramics” or “ceramic ware”.
Stoneware
————–
Stoneware is a “high-fired” clay, and as a result, is much stronger. It is fired at about 2185 degrees Fahrenheit, and becomes vitreous (i.e.: having the nature of glass). After firing it becomes sturdy and chip-resistant.
Porcelain
————
Porcelain is made from a number of materials. A pale clay (such as china white) is the main material. Other ingredients, such as feldspar, granite, and glass, are then ground and added to the clay. Once enough water is added to make the mixture workable, it is fired in a bisque kiln at a moderate temperature. Next comes a glazing and a “high-temperature” firing. The result is a piece of pottery that is delicate and translucent.
Telling the Difference
—————————
Now that we know what makes each of these items different, how do we tell them apart? Here’s the process we will follow:
1) First we need to see if it is porcelain. Porcelain (unlike earthenware and stoneware) is translucent, so light will shine through it. If you hold the piece up to the light, what do you see? If you see some light shining through, then it is porcelain.
2) If you have come this far, you know it’s either stoneware or earthenware. What’s the next test? How heavy is the item? If it’s pretty heavy for its size, then it’s most likely stoneware.
3) If the piece looks like hand-made pottery, then it is stoneware. Stoneware, unlike earthenware, will have a texture to it.
4) If the piece you are holding has a chip in it, take a close look at it. Is the area very white and “chalky” looking? Can you scrape off a bit more material with your fingernail? If so, then it’s probably earthenware. Earthenware (once it has been fired) has a white, chalky look. Stoneware has a darker, textured look.
5) If any part of the piece is unglazed, take a look to see if textured clay is showing through. This means that it is stoneware.
Did you enjoy this little journey into the world of dinner set materials. We now know that porcelain, earthenware, and stoneware are the three main options. More information on dinner sets is available on our blog.

Coffee and other hot beverages have become an intrinsic part of many people’s work day. They may spend large amounts of money on coffee from take-out stores and restaurants, only to discard those drinks as they cool much quicker than the drinker might like. If you are thinking about buying travel coffee mugs you may just find that the right model is some of the best money you have ever spent.
If you have been looking at various travel mugs, you have seen the range of materials they can come in. Travel mugs are available which have been made of plastic, glass, ceramic, stoneware and stainless steel. The plastic mugs are much less popular now that people have been hearing stories on related health problems. Some plastics, when heated, can release toxic chemicals. They are also available in many different sizes. Travel mugs often start at about a 12 oz size and can range anywhere up to a mug that can hold 22 or 24 oz of liquid. This should be more than enough to get many people through a long day at work.
Of course, even a large mug can keep drinks very hot if they are insulated properly. Some of the best travel mugs have double walled construction to provide the necessary insulation. There is a pocket of air between the inner and outer walls and this is what keeps the drinks from cooling off too quickly. However, not all mugs can be put in the dishwasher without ruining the insulating qualities.
Since you will, in theory, be using your mug almost daily, keeping it clean is a primary consideration. It should have an opening wide enough to get your hand in so that you can clean down to the very bottom. You also want to make sure that you can put your mug in the dishwasher if that is important to you. The lid should also be totally removable so that you do not get a build up of coffee or tea around the rim.
The lid on your travel mug needs to be easy to open, remove, and seal properly. It should also be drip free since there is nothing worse than having coffee or tea leak on your suit while on the way to work. Ideally, your lid should be easy to open with only one hand. This can be especially important if you are planning on drinking the hot beverage inside while you are in the car, or if you are moving it around with your other hand full.
A cup holder is an important consideration when buying a travelling coffee mug. If you commute in your car, as many people do, it can be a problem if your mug will not fit the cup holder. Very few cars have space on the floor for a mug and the last thing you want is to spoil your car’s interior by spilling coffee on it.
There have been a few advancements in travelling coffee mugs. Tea lovers were once resigned to drinking bagged tea as there was no way to strain the contents of their mugs. This is no longer a problem. With the new French press mug, you can transport loose leaf tea and, with the simple press of the plunger, strain out coffee grounds or loose leaf tea. They keep the water hot until the moment you are ready to drink it.
Any travel mug can make a long commute more tolerable. By picking the right one you can enjoy hot coffee or tea no matter where you are or how long you have until you reach your destination.
If you like drinking a cup of coffee on your drive in to work, buy travel coffee mugs to keep your beverage warm. Choose the right coffee travel mug for you, here!
